Schedules & Vacation

Surgical Teams

Green Team: General surgery, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, endocrine surgery, trauma (operative and non-operative). Residents are assigned to this team with progressive responsibilities and case logs based on PGY level. Faculty on this team are:

Consult Rotation: PGY 1 and PGY 2 residents complete a one-month rotation for all general surgery and surgical specialty consults.

Critical Care Rotation: PGY 1 residents complete a one-month rotation and PGY 2 residents complete a two-month rotation in the ICU.

Endoscopy Rotation: An endoscopy rotation is with the Gastroenterology Division at TBHC. Surgical residents at the PGY 3/4 levels rotate on Tuesdays from 8 am to 1 pm in the endoscopy suite. This rotation is for one month and residents acquire additional knowledge and hands-on experience in endoscopic intervention including colonoscopy and upper endoscopy. This rotation is under the supervision of Dr. Madhavi Reddy, Chief of Gastroenterology at TBHC.

Orthopedic Rotation: An orthopedic rotation is with the Orthopedic Surgery Division at TBHC. Surgical residents at the PGY 1/2 levels rotate for one month. Residents learn additional knowledge and acquire experience in the diagnosis and perioperative management of traumatic orthopedic cases, both operative and non-operative. This rotation is under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Fetto, Chief of the Orthopedic Surgery Division at TBHC.

Surgical Intensive Care Team: Residents at the PGY 1/2 levels rotate at the critical care intensive care units. They are part of the critical care healthcare team who oversee the care of medical/surgical patients.

Outside Rotations

Trauma rotation at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY: Kings County Hospital has one of the busiest Level 1 trauma centers and some of the newest and most advanced operating rooms and radiology in the city. Residents at the PGY 3 level rotate at this trauma center for one month.

Transplant rotation at Columbia University Medical Center, New York, NY: Residents at the PGY 4 level rotate at the Transplantation Services under Dr. Jean Edmond, Chief.

General Surgery rotation at Mount Sinai Brooklyn, Brooklyn, NY: Residents at the PGY 3 level rotate for two months, and residents at the PGY 4 level rotate for two months at the General Surgery Services under Dr. Danny Sherwinter, Chief.​

Vacations

Surgical residents have four weeks of paid vacation. Vacation time is flexible and can be taken in a one-week or two-week period. Schedule of rotations for the calendar year includes requested vacation time. Chief residents are usually on vacation in June (in preparation for fellowships).
