We, the faculty of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, strive to encourage and enhance the development of Emergency Medicine physicians who will provide excellent, culturally competent care to all patients seeking their assistance. We train our residents to apply current, scientific-based, patient-centered clinical practices through a variety of educational modalities.

We maintain with confidence our residents will comprehend how the care they deliver will fit within the current standards of our national health system to ensure safe, cost-effective healthcare delivery for their patients.

Furthermore, we will promote nothing less than the highest standards of academic, clinical and professional excellence, whereby we will leave behind a legacy that will display our department’s passion and dedication to our specialty as well as to the patients we serve.

It is the mission of The Brooklyn Hospital Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program to provide compassionate, patient-centered care; education that is student-focused and committed to academic excellence; and a thorough understanding of emergency medicine research and evidence-based medicine. We will work toward this mission in an environment that provides personal and professional growth. Applying depth and judgment to how we manage critically ill patients in the acute setting, TBHC's Emergency Medicine Residency prepares you for just about anything.

Our residency program is the first emergency residency in Brooklyn. Our four-year training program has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education since 1989 and has a long tradition of excellence in both clinical and academic medicine. Our graduates have gone on to become leaders in Emergency Medicine.

The department includes 32 EM residents, 15 full-time faculty and three administrative assistants. We are academically affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The Emergency Department (ED) is designated as a Regional Stroke Center and STEMI center.

The hospital is a 464-bed, full-service teaching hospital in the Fort Greene neighborhood near Downtown Brooklyn and serves over 60,000 patients per year. Our program is located in the heart of Brooklyn, which allows our residents to live anywhere in NYC and enjoy all the fruits of this wonderful metropolis. From art, music and sports to food and much more, Brooklyn has it all. Our hospital is located near Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge for easy accessibility to Manhattan.

The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) officially finished a major Emergency Department renovation in the summer of 2022. The project was, in part, funded by a New York State Department of Health Transformation Grant of $25 million, the largest award for any New York City health provider in the year that it was granted. This renovation significantly improves the hospital’s response to traumatic injury and illness, and has resulted in a state-of-the-art facility with a separate pediatric emergency room, all within lifesaving minutes of our neighbors’ homes.

Furthermore, we will promote nothing less than the highest standards of academic, clinical, and professional excellence and we will leave behind a legacy that will display our department’s passion and dedication to our specialty as well as our sincere commitment to the Brooklyn community that we serve.
